We’ve been obsessed with crystals ever since Krystle Carrington. So, naturally, we were thrilled to meet artist Mickalene Thomas, whose works are covered in the things.

Thomas works out of a studio on Grand Avenue in Brooklyn, just up from the Navy Yard. Entering the space felt like walking into a candy factory – with brightly colored Swarovski crystals adorning the paintings and organized neatly in acrylic containers. It was a little nervewracking at first. We were afraid we’d knock something over.

A resident of the neighborhood she works in, Thomas shared with us about her inspiration, background, and hopes for the future.

The day of our visit she was busy preparing for an exhibit set to open in Culver City, California. She had also just completed an installation for MoMA, Le dejeuner sur l’herbe, which will be on view in the window of the museum’s 53rd Street entrance through this December.

Check out the slideshow below to learn more about Mickalene and her unique art.
